The Three Loves of the Christian
Text: Lk. 10:25-37
I. Can love be legislated?
A. God supplies what He demands (Rom. 8:3-4, 7-9a; Rom 5:5 "He has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit")
B. Agape love involves commitment of the will
II. The demands of the law of love
A. The legitimacy of a normal self-love
1. Neurotic forms of self-love
a. Selfishness (Lk. 15:11-12)
b. Pride (rom. 12:3)
c. Loathing self (emotional depression)
2. Characteristics of a healthy self-love
a. Realistic self-acceptance (Rom. 12:3; Gal. 6:3)
b. Humility (Lk. 15:18-19)
B. Loving one's neighbor
1. A spirit of genuine caring (Rom. 12:9a, 10a)
2. Identifying with others (Rom. 12:15)
3. An inclusive love (Lk. 10:29-37)
4. A genuine concern for the spiritual welfare of others (Jude 22-23; 2 Pet. 3:9)
C. Loving God
1. Being devoted to him
2. Loving Him in times of hardship
